Fire Damage & Smoke Damage Restoration in Frederick Md

Cleaning Up Fire Damage
Restoration professionals are the experts

When there is a building fire, property owners usually are left with the hazardous aftermath. Not only is it a disaster of mess to clean up but fire damage is also very dangerous to deal with. Restoration professionals are experts in cleaning up fire damage and would be the best people to use to do the cleanup from a house fire.

An overwhelming mess of smoke, debris, damage, and soot are what victims of fire damage have left over after the flames are put out. The thick smell of smoke remains in the house making it extremely unhealthy to inhale the trapped toxins and subsequently very dangerous to cleanup the damage. Walls and ceilings are burnt black, the floors are covered in soot and debris, and what is left of the house is not only hazardous but traumatic to the victims of fire damage. Cleanup of fire damage should be left to restoration professionals because they have experience dealing with fire damage and the hazards associated with the remains.

As many victims of fire damage know, the aftermath of a home fire is an exhausting mess of debris, smoke damage and soot. Walls are stained black, floors are covered in soot, and ceilings are black. The lingering smell of smoke can be overwhelming and debris can be dangerous to navigate. These leftover remnants are not only hazardous, but are also a terrible reminder of a time that victims most likely would prefer to forget. Fire damage cleanup is a difficult task that is best left to professionals.

Professionals in restoration have expertise in salvaging whats left and preventing additional unneeded damage. Items that only have minor fire damage can be taken care of with professional cleaning services. Some items can even be refurbished to look brand new again. The smell of smoke trapped in the house can be eliminated with deodorization cleaning.

Carpets and fabrics are easily stained with soot. A fire restoration professional can removed soot stains with an industrial vacuum cleaner. Carpets covered in soot will need to be professionally cleaned and the walls will have to be scrubbed to move all the smoke stains. Hiring a fire damage restoration company would be ideal because they are experienced in handling toxic chemicals and deep stains. Restoration professionals never use water-based cleaners to get rid of smoke stains because those only make the stains soak deeper and would make it almost impossible to get rid of.

Since smoke seeps into the vents, walls and fabrics in a home, the first odor fogging doesn't remove the smell and a odor neutralizer surely is not strong enough either. It is important to have a professional come in and deodorize the entire house multiple time to prevent the smoke smell from coming back. If the smell still lingers after deodorization, the professionals might suggest you replace the insulation in the attic because insulation absorbs odors the most.

Advertising Agencies in Frederick Md

Advertisement agencies are firms that help you to advertise in a professional and a cost effective way. Advertising agencies are becoming more and more popular, thanks to the reliability and efficiency of work offered by them. With the tremendous growth and competition in the advertising world it is becoming more and more difficult to advertise your product in the lowest possible cost. Almost each and every company local, national, international, everybody wants to advertise about their products and services, this has contributed to the increasing prices of advertising.

Big companies and organizations do not mind spending a fortune for their ads, but the pinch of the rising cost is felt by newly started small scale businesses. The big companies sign up famous personalities as their brand ambassadors and also capture all the premium time slots on the TV, premium front page corners in the news paper, cover pages of the magazine, popular internet websites, by paying high sums of money. This leaves little scope for other companies to broadcast or publish their ads and market their products. Advertisements help the brands to establish themselves as well as flourish and help them increase their brand value.

Role of advertising agencies:

- Mediator: Advertising agencies work as mediators between the publisher and the advertiser. They make sure that both the parties get the best deal and no one feels like cheated. Both the parties then have to pay some commission to the advertising agency and this is how the revenue for the advertising agency is generated.

- Right bid: The advertising agencies help the advertiser to make the right and the most profitable bid. They help the advertiser get premium slots and premium ad deals with proper market research and reliable advice. They also help you start your ad campaign in the limited revenue available.

- Ad making: They help you make the best ads. They have got people who work on the concept of the ads and who create a good as well as an effective ad. For TV commercials they also have professional and eligible ad directors.

- Designers and artists: These advertising agencies have professional artists and designers. These people help you design a good looking and attention seeking news paper or magazine or internet based ad. They also decide on the colors that should be used in the ad and make it very attractive.

- Writers: These advertising agencies also employ writers with good skill and command over the language. These writers’ help you wrote bold and witty, eye catching titles to for your ads. They also help you write the content of the ad in such a way that it will impress the reader and get him involved with your product or your services.

- Management: These advertising agencies also have people who manage your ads. These people keep your ads updated with the latest content and keep them changing every month or week to catch the attention of the reader and keep him interested. They also see to it that the content or concept of your ad is not being copied by anybody else.

Top Maryland Search Ranking Guaranteed

Maryland Search Engine Ranking

Put up or shut up

You just don't spend thousands of dollars in annual advertising fees unless the firm you're shelling out cold hard cash to is capable of delivering.

If that advertising firm can't even get itself ranked in the top ten for the keywords that it's clients are likely to look for them under, well... What good are they?

These Results are from Google, as of November 17, 2009:

Local Google Advertising (134,000,000 competing sites attempting to be #1 here)

Local Google Search Ranking 18,500,000

I'm the only one with 2 listings in the top ten by the way...

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and What is Search Engine Ranking?

In a nut shell SEO is tweaking your existing company website so Google's robot will
"like it more". There isn't a team of people picking and choosing who gets to be #1, a robot picks those spots. The "O" in SEO is for "optimization"

Search Engine Ranking is roughly 20% on page optimization and 80% OFF PAGE, notice the percentages there... what off page means is you build EXTRA websites to POINT TO your existing website. in other words "link building", Google that phrase if you need more detail.

search engine OPTIMIZATION is relatively easy if you're a webmaster
search engine RANKING (the part that makes your company phone ring and makes money go into your cash register) that part is TEDIOUS, TIME CONSUMING, and part art/ part alchemy/ part staying in tune with what's hot now, what is no longer hot (but was 2 months ago), and getting paid for BOTH what you know AND what you do.

It takes a minimum of 100 man hours of link building to get a company website, pretty much any company website to rank in the top 5 or 10 slots in Google for a county, one county, that is to say LOCAL Google listings, county wide.

about 3 times that or 300 man hours to do the same thing State wide.

So why does SEO cost so much?

you tell me.

What is link popularity and why Frederick Maryland needs it

Why a Frederick Maryland or Montgomery County Maryland Business website needs to improve it's link popularity:

What is it and why you'd better start thinking in these terms.

There can be only one number one. Google has to pick one, just one... everyone else is second place or worse.

How does Google Decide who gets to be #1?

What if it comes down to Coke or Pepsi?
lets say both sites are equal in every metric you can think of... There still has to be one number one...

If Coke has 110,000 other sites linking to it, and Pepsi has 180,000 other sites linking to it... guess who wins?

It's time to improve you link popularity!
Why bother with link building?

Link popularity and link quality are very important because every major search engine now considers them as a part of their ranking algorithms. If you don't have links, you won't rank well for competitive keywords.

If your page includes all the important on-the-page criteria and scores well with Page Primer, it's time to focus on your links. Good inbound links can move your page up the ranking ladder and act as new entry points to your site. But how does your site get those coveted inbound links we hear so much about?

First off, let's make sure we understand the basics. Link popularity is the measure of inbound links to your web site. Link analysis evaluates which sites are linking to you and the link text itself.

Fortunately, there are a lot of ways to improve your link quality and popularity, which will give you a boost in the rankings. Here are some guidelines to help you set up your own linking campaign:

1. Prepare your site first
Before you start your link building campaign, take time to get your site in shape. Make sure your site looks professional, has good content and is easy to navigate. Validate your HTML code and check your links with a tool like HTML Toolbox. If a potential linker goes to your site and finds broken pages, they are not going to want to link to you.
In addition, directories have gone on record saying they may exclude sites with broken links and page errors. Directories want only professional looking sites in their databases, so do your homework on your site before you start promoting it and your linking campaign will be more effective.

2. Budget time for link building
Don't expect to grow your link popularity overnight. Budget time every week to work on link building. If you force yourself to spend a couple hours a week on link building, it will become part of your routine. Pick one day a week and set aside time as your "link building time." If you don't make it a priority, it won't get done.
Link building is an incremental activity. Over time these one or two new links start adding up until they are hundreds or even thousands of links.

3. Establish realistic link goals
Don't expect to see instant results. Link building is difficult, frustrating and time intensive. Convincing another web site to link to you can be exasperating. If you get one good quality link a month you're doing better than the majority of sites out there.
Patience and creativity are key to link building. Track your progress so you know who you've asked already. It could be embarrassing to ask a site for a link if they've already given you one.
If a company initially declines your link request, wait a while and then ask again. Their company focus may change over time. A "no" today may change into a "yes" 6 - 9 months later.

4. Develop internal management support
If you're link building in-house, build support from your company's internal management for your link building. This usually means educating management about the benefits of link building.
Link popularity is unique to the search engine industry - it's not taught in graduate schools (not yet, anyway). Sit down with your management and explain the concept behind link building - don't assume they understand it or have even heard of the term. In fact, most won't have a clue what you're talking about.

Explain link building in terms they will understand and in ways that will get their attention, such as describing the relationship of link building and increased revenue. Talking about making more money usually gets management's attention.

Why worry about management support? You will need it to provide the time and money you need to get into search engines or directories.

5. Link popularity is all about quality
Be selective about the sites from which you request links. Search engines use sophisticated rules when judging the importance of a link, and the popularity of the site linking to you is a key criteria. One link from CNet is worth far more than a link from a personal web site.
And don't even think of using a link farm! Link farms are sites that exist solely to link to other web sites. Link farms are a blatant attempt to inflate your link popularity, and search engines take a dim view of them. Google in particular has been known to ban sites found using a link farm.

Try to identify non-competitive sites in the same field as your site. Links from sites that are related to your area carry more weight than sites from Aunt Sue's favorite horse site. That doesn't mean you should refuse a link from Aunt Sue, just be aware it won't help you much in link quality terms. On the other hand, links from sites within your industry are strong endorsements for your site.

6. Develop a relationship with a site
Before you ask for the link, get to know the web site. Establish yourself as a real human first. That way, when you ask for a link, it's harder for them to say no.
Impersonal broadcast emails asking for links are spam. Sure, it's easier, but it will only result in making another company mad at you. Spam link requests do not work and waste everyone's time. Don't do it!

7. Provide the linking code
Make it easy for other sites to link to you. Send the prospective linker the exact HTML code you want in the link and suggest which page you want the link from. This ensures the right words are used in the link and reduces the burden in setting up the link. Everybody on the Internet is pressed for time and if you don't make it "drop-in simple" by giving them the exact HTML, you've made their job too hard. Make it easy and your success rate will go up.

8. Get directory listings
Jumpstart your link campaign by getting directory links first. This is especially important if you have a new site or a site with no inbound links. A shortage of inbound links puts your site at a severe disadvantage because link analysis is an important part of every search engine's ranking algorithm.
The way to overcome this disadvantage is to get a few quality links. A good way to start is to get listed in as many directories as you can. There are many directories out there, and the more you can get into the better.
A few to target include:
• Open Directory
• Yahoo
• LookSmart
• Zeal.com
• Joeant.com
• Business.com
Be aware that most of these directories require you to pay for a listing. It's worth the expense.

9. Consider bartering for links
It's a good idea to have something to offer in return for a link. Many sites won't link to you unless you link back to them or otherwise make it worth their while. Create a Resources or Partner page that allows you to have a place from which you can easily link to them.
You might also offer to work a barter arrangement with them. If you have a popular site with their target market, they might consider free advertisements in exchange for a link. If the link is of great value to you, be prepared to give something back.

10. Link building alternatives
If time constraints keep you from link building, consider outsourcing your link popularity work. Link building is undoubtedly the most time consuming part of search engine optimization. You may find it is not cost effective to do it in house. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do it, it just means you hire someone else to do it for you.

Many top SEO firms have turned to outsourcing this function. For example: Jill Whalen of highrankings.com uses Debra O'Neil-Mastaler's link building firm.
Outsourcing to a reputable link building firm ensures good links and could be a more efficient model for you if you are already time limited.
One word of caution if you do chose to hire a company specializing in link building: make sure any firm you hire follows good link building practices. Ask them to describe the process they use to request links Make sure they follow a personalized approach, and don't simply spam sites with requests for links.

If they refuse to discuss their link building methods you can assume they use impersonal widespread email drops or link farms - that's spam. They may call it a fancy name, but if the process involves sending out large numbers of form emails, it's still spam and will only set your campaign backwards and injure your company's professional reputation. Go find a different company or develop your links in house.

Just do it!

Link popularity is important and the link building process needs to be given high priority. Link analysis is only going to get more important to search engines, not less. Search engines have found it highly resistant to manipulation and a legitimate way to measure the importance of a site. Since link building takes time, the sooner you start the better.

So think of link building as a long-term investment in your site. Put in a little time now to improve your linking today to insure a good search engine ranking in the future.

Facebook reaches the 200 Million User Mark

Facebook and Frederick Maryland Small Business...

What does one have to do with the other?

Unless you've been living in a cave, you've heard of MySpace... well MySpace is for our children and FACEBOOK is for US. Social Media is changing... well EVERYTHING

Social Media isn't only changing the Internet, it's putting newspapers out of business, forcing the TV and Cable News to incorporate it (or else get left in the dust), Social Media is making conventional Advertising OBSOLETE.

Facebook just broke 200,000,000 users... And it's now offering Business Accounts!

Facebook's total web traffic, the number of users using facebook daily is, at the moment, a third of the total numbers of people using Google, according to WebProNews, an industry online newsletter.

If Facebook's growth continues the way it has been, perhaps it should be considered Google's greatest threat (when I say threat, I mean competition) - maybe not in general search, but in terms of where advertisers are spending their money. Certainly in the foreseeable future, people will continue using Google to search, and advertisers will continue to spend money advertising with them (probably even more now that they are doing more targeting), but Facebook also targets, and it's not going to be overlooked.
If you own a business and you don't take advantage of the internet fastest growing place to advertise... you deserve to have your competition 'clean your clock'! Facebook Business Pages are FREE (and they get a third of the traffic that behemoth Google gets)

Frederick Web Promotions is now offering to create, manage and maintain small business Facebook pages. Company Facebook Pages content is now search-able from Google, personal facebook pages are not. Company Facebook Page Ghostwriting is now available from Frederick Web Promotions
Want to see an example?
Frederick Web Promotions handles the web presence for Gilbert's Restaurant Equipment and Supply. We create, manage and maintain a Frederick.com sponsor page, 2 blogs and 4 online photo albums for them and we manage thier Facebook page as well: Maryland Used Restaurant Equipment on Facebook

Facebook is Your Father's (and Mother's) Social Network

By John C Abell EmailMarch 26, 2009 | 9:20:23 AMCategories: Facebook, Social Media, Social Networking
Facebook (and other social networks) has been skewing older for a while, but the trend has been "massive" in the past six months, according to InsideFacebook.com. In the past two months alone the number of new members over 35 has doubled. Marketers take note: the median age is now over 25, and the largest single group 35 to 44.

Women over 55 remain the fastest growing group, and growth among the teen and college-age set has been relatively paltry. In absolute numbers there are now even slightly more members between the ages of 45 and 65 than there are 13-to 17-year-olds.
Looking at Facebook US audience growth over the last 180 days, it’s clear that Facebook is seeing massive increases in adoption amongst users 35-65. The fastest growing demographic on Facebook is still women over 55 — there are now nearly 1.5 million of them active on Facebook each month.
The biggest growth in terms of absolute new users over the last six month came amongst users 35-44. Over 4 million more US women 35-44 and nearly 3 million more US men 35-44 used Facebook in March 2009 compared to September 2008.

Tangible Evidence- Maryland Internet Advertising

When I first started in Local Google Advertising as a *lone wolf*, single man operation the first few prospects I pitched my services to were skeptical.
So I "divided the waters" to illustrate my prowess.

I got feedback to the effect of: "That's a fluke, I'll bet you can't use those free websites to STAY at the top of Google"

These Frederick Maryland Business Owners had paid a "Web Design" firm to create a web presence for their business. The Web Design Guru's told the Frederick Business Owners "You need this" and "You need that".

Web Design firms typically don't know squat about Frederick Maryland Search Engine Optimization.
A body in motion tends to remain in motion...

No one, it seems, wanted to hear that all of the big money they paid for glitzy web design was... well, wasted.

So to answer my critiques I'm toning down my hype and boldly going to claim the top spots in all the major search engines... not ONLY in Frederick Maryland

Not only in Maryland
Not only in the US

Local Business Results - above the organic listings

Search For a Local Vendor

Have you done a search for a local vendor because you needed to find a specfic product or service and you wanted to find the closest vendor to your house?

Most of us are aware that there are 10 listings per results page for both Google and Yahoo. In Search Engine Optimization speak, these 10 listings are called "organic listings". The listings on the right column are sponsored listings, people generally know that some bigger company paid to get their ad there. It's generally agreed in the SEO community that people tend to trust a listing in the organic serps before they trust a firm that has the big bucks to dominate the right hand sponsored listings.

But there's a way to get YOUR listing ABOVE the ten organic listings. Google calls these listings Google Maps. But that's the term Google gives to the webmasters.
What does the regular person using the search engine see?

The Power of Company Blogs

Time and time again a company blog outperforms a conventional website OUTPERFORMS a given companies existing website.
To answer that question it's best to ask a bigger, better question:

How does Google decide who gets to be ranked where or why is one site ranked higher than another?

Let's say there are three similar websites from three competitors.
...without something unique about a given site, and they're all homogeneous, then the only thing left for Google to use as a deciding factor is:

Number of incoming links
The quality of those incoming links

a high(er) quality incoming link

If site one has 12 incoming links
site two has 120 incoming links
site three has 12000 incoming links

who do you think is going to rank #1???

However... if http://fredericknewspost.com links to you
and http://washingtonpost.com links to you...

Which one do you think is going to 'carry more weight'?

If you were Google, what would YOU do about that?

Want Proof?

Do your self a favor, get a blog for your company before your competitors get one...

I want MY website ranked, not some blog?

I'm hearing from prospective clients that want to hire a local Search Engine Optimization Company:

"Why would I want some blog listed in Google? I want MY (existing) website to be Nubmer ONE in Google.

Here's the low down on "How to Get YOUR website ranked"

How Google decides which site goes in the number ONE spot depends on a formula (one that Google most definatly wants to keep secret). That formula uses "Link Popularity" to figure into it's "wieghting scale".

What is "Link Popularity"?

"Back Links or otherwise known as Inbound Links are links pointing to your website from another website. The number of such back links that point towards your website indicates the importance and the popularity of your website to the search engines"

Excerpted from: Importance of Back Links to a Website and How to Obtain Them. by Kanaga Siva
http://www.goarticles.com/cgi-bin/showa.cgi?C=1146388

Ok, so what exactly is meant by "Wieghting Scale"?

If your website url (link) is used in, lets say an article on:

  • WashingtonPost.com

  • FrederickNewsPost.com

  • Which of those two (online versions of) newspapers is going to carry more 'wieght'?

Which brings us to: "Why a blogspot.com blog"?

Easy answer: To get the As Many Of top ten listings (for a given keyword or keyword phrase) in the S.E.R.P.s pages to have YOUR company listed.

    Ok, so now what's a s.e.r.p. ???

    Search Engine Results Page

how do we go about CRUSHING the competitors listings in Google?

Fill the top spots with a listing, any listing, something that has:

  • YOUR Company NAME

  • YOUR Phone Number

  • and assuming you paid the search engine consultant...

  • YOUR company website's URL

  • what'll that get you?

    crowd out the competitors listings

Effectively create incoming links to YOUR existing website.
(back links are also called incoming links)

Now why would we do that?

Blogs are the "Bait on the end of your hook.

You probably don't want to change your main website all that much...

You CAN however change a company blog OFTEN

    Why?

... we want to keep changing the bait until we hit on the correct 'bait' (keyword phrase) that makes your phone ring/ email inquiries/ ORDERS keep coming in.

If you're not in Google, you don't exist

Google is set to be THE PHONE COMPANY in the near future.

What "MA BELL" was to the 1950's, Google will be to the 2010's.

    This is indisputable...

The advertising paradigm of the last century was to use the Yellow Pages, the Phone book was THE way to get your companies message out to the buying public.

    NOT ANY MORE!!!

If your company isn't listed at or near the top of Google

    YOU DO NOT EXIST

Google results will soon be on everyone's cell phone, soon all cell phones will come with Internet access as standard equipment.

    Don't get left behind.

Key Word Phrase- that's what makes you money

What do people actually type into Google in order to find a company that does what you do?

Well, that's not whats on the minds of prospective customers, is it?

They really don't care what you do... all they care about is what they need to have/ or have done, right?

What word or words (or phrase) is someone really going to type into a search engine like Google or Yahoo to find what they need done?

The first thing a person sees when they type x, y or z into Google is that they forgot to tell Google WHERE they want to go to buy x, y or z.

What if search engine results for a company in Africa or Asia or Alaska show up?

    doesn't do em much good...

so then they get smarter: x, y or z in Frederick County Maryland...

    Now were getting closer.

    Too much Business... Really?

    Too much business?

Is there such a thing as Too Much Business?

Don't turn away business... raise your prices!

While talking to local Frederick County business owners I frequenly hear this phrase:

"I've got too much business!!... I don't want any more customers."

"I'm booked solid! I cant handle any new clients."

These business owners work alone, they don't want the headaches of hiring employees or having them not show up for work.

Never Turn away business!... Raise your prices!

What you want is customers who can afford to pay you what you want to get paid.

You want clients from the upper income group...the kind of people who don't have to check their bank balance... People that have disposable income

Did you know that 7% of all Montgomery County Residents are Millionaires?

Here's what you do... so you're booked solid with your existing client base, right?

Set up a website, raise the fees you charge (on that site), put a different cell phone number and/or a different email address JUST FOR THAT SITE!

The fees you quote from that new stream of business, charge so much that you're embarrased to hear the figure leave your mouth...

When they say yes... you FIND A WAY to accomodate them.

    this is simple.

Yellowpages-History? Phonebooks: case of pulp friction

Yellowpages - History? Phonebooks: A serious case of pulp friction
by Tania Deluzuriaga, New York Times News Service

They’re the original search engines, leftover from the days of rotary phones and answering machines.

Once valued reference books kept in a certain drawer or cabinet for easy and frequent access, the massive telephone directories landing on doorsteps and in apartment foyers across the city in recent weeks seemed bound for more ignoble destinations.

Days after hundreds of thousands of the 2,000-page, 4-pound tomes were delivered, they began showing up in recycling bins and trash dumpsters. From Beacon Hill to Jamaica Plain, they moldered on porches and driveways, lay strewn across sidewalks, and sat in large, untouched piles in condo and apartment buildings.

In an era when consumers are increasingly conscious of the waste they generate, arrival of the phone books was greeted with an annoyed sigh or worse.

"All that’s waste," grumbled Gerri Cummings, 70, eyeing the waist-high pile of phone books orphaned in the foyer of her South Boston apartment building. Yellow Book delivered stacks of its yellow pages directories, enough for each of the residents of Cummings’ 96-unit building for the elderly and disabled. A few days later, Verizon did the same.

"All my phone numbers are in my phone," Cummings said, waving a silver cellphone that she keeps in her pocket.
A few blocks away, 33-year-old Jason Muth vented his disgust in his blog.

"Each time I’m greeted by piles of bound paper at my doorstep, I think the same exact thing: what a waste," he wrote. "The energy to distribute and manufacture these, the raw materials used to print these, and our time to dispose of them properly."

When Verizon delivered its directories a couple days later, Muth’s disgust turned to anger. Of the 10 directories delivered to his address this month, not one made it inside, he said.
"What industry is indiscriminately allowed to throw their product on your front step and leave you to deal with it?" he fumed in a phone interview. "It’s environmentally wrong; it’s morally wrong."

Representatives from Verizon and Yellow Book declined to speak to a reporter about their products or distribution practices. In a written statement, a Verizon spokesman said the company has regionalized its directory and made it smaller and more user-friendly. Yellow Book, which distributed 883,000 copies of its directory in the Boston area last year, said that 87 percent of adults use a print phone directory at least once a year.

"We get complaints from people when they don’t get their phone book," said Stephanie Hobbs, a spokeswoman for the Yellow Pages Association, the industry’s trade organization.

For those who don’t want it, there is little recourse. Unlike services that let consumers sign up for no-call lists to stop cold-calling advertisers, it’s not so easy to avoid getting the phone book. Some directory companies have phone numbers that residents can call to stop phone book deliveries to their homes, but the numbers can be hard to locate. And governments say they are constrained in imposing blanket restrictions.

"It’s a First Amendment issue," said Sharon Gillett, commissioner of the state Department of Telecommunications and Cable. "How are they different from free newspapers or political fliers?"

Despite competition from the Internet, the phone directory market continues to slowly grow, with a value this year of about billion, according to the Yellow Pages Association.

While services like Google and 411 are providing heightened competition, people still turn to their yellow pages when they are ready to buy, Hobbs said, citing a third-party study that found American adults consulted phone books 13.4 billion times last year.

But even some advertisers in the books say they’re questioning the practice. "I keep contemplating whether I should give it up; it costs me a fortune," said Scott Ruth, a Marlborough plumber who ran an ad for his business in the Boston Yellow Book.

Though business has been good, Ruth said, he has all the work he can handle, and he is not sure that spending "several thousand dollars" a year on advertising in the phone book is worth it.
"I haven’t picked one up in I don’t know how long," he said.

    Inbound links... Why and How

Inbound links, link exchangesand link acquisition

Link text (the text that is clicked on when clicking on a link) is singly the most important factor when Google determines the rankings for any given searchterm. This article isn't about that aspect of inbound links, although it is briefly touched on. This article discusses inbound links for their link popularity/PageRank value, and provides ideas on how to acquire them.

Why do we need inbound links?

Even before Google came on the scene, link popularity (linkpop) was being used by one or two search engines as part of their algorithm when determining the rankings for any given searchterm. Then when Google arrived with their link-based PageRank, link popularity took off and became an absolute essential ingredient in achieving top rankings.

The idea behind linkpop is that the more pages that link to a page, the more important the page is and it, therefore, deserves a higher ranking than it would otherwise have.
Some engines simply counted the number of links coming into a page (inbound links), but Google took the idea a step further. Each inbound link comes comes from a page which itself has inbound links. The more inbound links on the linking page, the more important that page is and, therefore, the more important the link to our page is. So Google gives more weight to inbound links from important pages that it does to inbound links from lesser pages. They call the idea "PageRank", and you can learn all about in this PageRank article.

Google is the world's number one search engine, and currently provides the results for around 80% of all the searches done in the world. Because of that, it is vitally important for any website that relies on search engine traffic to do well in Google. Doing well in Google means making the site 'important' in Google's eyes and, to do that, the site must have good inbound links - as many of them as possible, and preferably from important pages (pages with medium to high PageRank values).

How do we get inbound links?

There are a number of ways. Some of them are:
    -
Directories Directories usually provide one-way links to websites, although some require a reciprocal link. Personally, I have no time for those that require reciprocal links, because they aren't really trying to be useful directories. Submitting to directories is time-consuming and boring, but there are a number of cheap directory submitting services that do a very good job.

There are several of them in this forum thread.

    Forums

Join forums and place links to your site(s) in your signature line. Use your main searchterms as the link text - I'll come to why that is necessary later in this article. But before spending time writing lots of posts with your signature line in each post, make sure that the forum is spiderable by checking the robots.txt file, and make sure that non-members don't have session IDs in the URLs. Also make sure that links in signature lines are not hidden from spiders (view the source code to make sure that signature links are in plain HTML format and not in Javascript).

    Link exchange centers

Find a join free link exchange center like LinkPartners.com. There you can find a categorized directory of websites that also want to exchange links. Be careful not to sign up with FFA (Free For All) sites because they are mostly email address gatherers and you can expect a sudden increase in email spam soon after you sign up. Also, only sign up with centers where you can approach other sites personally, and where they can approach you personally.

Do not join any link farms!!! Link farms, such as LinksToYou.com, sound excellent for building up linkpop and PageRank, but search engines (Google in particular) disapprove of them as blatant attempts to manipulate the rankings and they will penalize sites that use them. Once a site has been penalized, it is very difficult to get the penalty lifted, so avoid all link farms.

Email requests (a) Search on Google for your main searchterms and find the websites that are competing with you. Then find which sites link to them by searching "link:www. competitor-domain.com". Email them and ask for a link exchange. (b) Search on Google for websites that are related to your site's topic, but not direct competitors, and ask them for a link exchange.

    Buy them
There are websites that want to sell links. They are usually medium to high PageRank sites, and often the link will be placed on multiple pages, or all pages within the site. It's possible to approach individual sites where you would like your links to appear, but it is much quicker, easier and more reliable to use a middle-man service (or broker).

Link brokers offer links for sale on behalf of other websites (you could use the service to sell links on your site!). With these services, it is usual to be able to choose the type (topic) of the website(s) where you want to place your links. I am not aware of any disreputable practises with link brokering.

Finally, there are even links for sale by public auction, such as the one at LinkAdage Auctions.

    What type of links?

    Inbound links serve three purposes:-
    (1) they add linkpop and PageRank to the site,
    (2) they send traffic to the site, and
    (3) if the link text (the text that is clicked on) is good, then the page's rankings can be improved.

    (1) for linkpop, either text or graphic links are fine,
    (2) for traffic, text links are known to be more effective than graphic links, and
    (3) to positively affect a page's rankings, text links are the best.
So get text links and not graphic links.

    (1) for linkpop, get links from anywhere,
    (2) for traffic, get links from related sites, and
    (3) to improve the page's rankings, get links from anywhere - the higher the PageRank of the linking page, the better and, whenever possible, make sure that the link text is one of your main searchterms (see Search Engine Optimization - the basics).

    Summary

Inbound links are important for websites that want to move up the rankings. Inbound links, with the right link text, are essential for achieving top rankings.

Most websites are not natural link magnets, and link acquisition can be time-consuming and frustrating. Many websites that are approached by email will say no, but some will say yes. For top rankings, it is essential to take the time and get many inbound links.

UpdateGoogle's "Big Daddy" update, which was rolled out during the first part of 2006, was largely concerned with their crawling and indexing functions. The update contained a new concept for them - making a mathematical calculation to determine how many of a site's pages to have in the index. The mathematical formula is concerned with the nature and trustability of links coming into a site, the nature of links going out of it, and the quantities of those.
The new crawl/index system doesn't specifically penalize sites for having too many links of the 'wrong kind', but it doesn't give them credit for crawl/index purposes, and many sites suffered by having large numbers of pages removed from the index.

This is important, because it means that exchanging links willy-nilly can actually cause some or many of a site's pages to be removed from the index, due to the lowering of the site's IBLs/OBLs score. So it is better to exchange on-topic links than to exchange off-topic ones. The days of a link is a link is a link are over. The helpfulness of an over-abundance of reciprocal links are gone, and it can actually cause some of a site's pages to be dropped from the index.
